On Tuesday Yahaira created a menu so we could play restaurant. She has been on a restaurant/grocery store kick for awhile now. I used that interest to have her practice her spelling, handwriting and math skills. She wrote out the items on the menu, decided their cost and then we played. She was so happy to get to be the waitress. She was even awesome with adding dollars and cents. I ordered 2 items on the menu and she was able to add them together to give me my total bill. Now tell me that that isn't learning? She learns (I mean truly learns...as in retains it because she wants to learn it) when she gets to direct the context. We've tried the sit here and do what I tell you to but it almost always ended in frustration on both parts: Yahaira in tears and me being mean because I felt that she was playing dumb. So those days are pretty much behind us. I sometimes still try the sit down and do a focused lesson on reading, but when she starts to get weary we stop and let her do something else she wants to do.
Here are the girls from this morning. They had a lot of fun climbing all over the car while I cleaned the garage.
Yay Yahaira! I can't wait to see you all next month! We even got "Dad's room" finished today. Floors and all :)
