The dirt of learning

Here is a second post for today (probably 1 more to come tonight after we eat dinner).
Yesterday afternoon the girls and I planted some vegetable seeds. They were so happy to be getting their hands on things (and getting dirty). I admit, I was using this as a time to train myself to let the girls get into things and explore on their own. I really need to let Yahaira have access to some tools (real tools) so she can build things on her own. I remember being 5 and playing with a real hammer and real nails, building whatever my siblings or I thought we could build. We even made our own version of a tree house (bring back memories mi familia?!). So I need to stop being a over protective-you're gonna hurt yourself (yes she'll probably whack a finger...I still do at times)-momma and let her learn learn learn! That's what freedom to learn (unschooling) is, learning what you find interesting. I want her, and all my children, to be unafraid to delve into things and figure out how stuff works. So yesterday was a therapy session for my need to protect control.

First put on your eye protection (which I myself never do)
Next take a hammer and whack some old bricks to break them into pieces.
Now place the pieces of bricks into the bottom of the container (make sure you've poked holes in the bottom to drain excess water).
Install your trellis and then add dirt.
After you have it 3/4 full, place your seeds (tomatoes for us) in and cover with more dirt.
We also made seedling starters for some other vegetables we hope to grow.
Add dirt half way.
Place a few seeds in each egg spot then cover with more dirt.
Our dirt was pretty wet so we didn't water them, but check them daily to see if you should add water.
Place them in a sunny spot and watch them sprout.
